So what is hosting anyway? Something to do with a bunch of servers, space, and your web site, but how many of us really know how it all works?
Let’s take apartment hunting as an example (this analogy will come up often in this guide). There are thousands of apartment buildings out there to choose from, just as there are thousands of hosting companies. And each apartment building has different sizes of apartments it rents out to its tenants. There are one-bedroom apartments for one or two people and two and three bedroom apartments for a greater number of tenants. Hosting is very similar. Relate that building to a server and the apartments as the space that you rent to host your site. That’s essentially how it all works. Hosting is basically renting space on a server to host your web site and make it available on the Internet.
There are many benefits to renting an apartment compared to buying a house. For example, a house can be expensive and difficult to maintain on your own. When you rent an apartment, on the other hand, the landlord fixes all the maintenance problems, such as annoying clogged toilets and broken air conditioners. Similarly, a hosting company fixes the problems related to your web site and also offers tools that will help you augment your site to make it catchier and more informative.
