So now Rachel has a domain name and knows she wants a web site. But what will make her site available to her club members and those people wanting to join? What does she need to do next? Before she develops her site, she needs to find a hosting company; using the analogy from before, she needs to find an apartment for her site. Just as there are different sizes and types of apartment buildings, there are various hosting companies. Some are just plain cheap, some are convenient, some are reliable, and some are all three of these things! In these different apartment buildings, there are also different types and sizes of apartments. It works the same for hosting companies and their different types of plans and services. Just as you would when apartment hunting, you have to determine what attributes are important to you in a hosting company. Is it price, reliability, or features? You pay more for more extra space on the server just like you would spend more for extra space in an apartment. Features in hosting plans also work the same way; you would pay more for an apartment that offers a dishwasher, the same way that you would pay more for a plan that offers Windows® Media Player or chat programs. What you want or need is up to you.
Be warned though, just as in apartment hunting, you may get some empty promises! Similar to the leaky faucets, broken toilets, or bad management, you may discover when you take a risk on a cheaper, less reliable apartment, you may find the same empty promises of the same sort from your hosting company. Do your research and pick a company that’s reliable and will offer you what you need…always!
Rachel determined that she needed a very affordable host that was reliable but didn’t really need too many frills like streaming media or a lot of disk space. She did some research and found a hosting company that was perfect for her. It was affordable and offered the plans and features that she needed for her club’s site.
